How Microsoft intends to inform
Windows 8.1 customers of the end-of-support date in January 2023
As
the follow-up operating system to Windows 8, Microsoft released Windows 8.1 in
2013. In January 2018, the business declared Windows 8.1's "Mainstream
Support" to be over. Under Microsoft's lifecycle support policy, Windows
8.1 received an additional five years of "Extended Support." Users
received routine security updates, potential software updates, and technical
support during this time and will continue to do so.
The
software juggernaut recently disclosed that effective of January 10, 2023, it
will no longer support Windows 8.1. Additionally, according to ZDNet, the
business is now preparing to begin informing users in July of the impending end
of support. The Microsoft has previously used these warnings to persuade users
of earlier versions of Windows to update to the most recent versions.
How will Microsoft let consumers know
when support will end?
Microsoft
has stated that users of Windows 8.1 will soon start receiving notifications
from the firm urging them to update to a version of Windows that the company
still supports. Users will start getting notifications in July with three
clicking alternatives: "Learn more," "Remind me later," or "Remind
me after the end-of-support date." These options will be available until
January 2023.
Alternatives for users using Windows
8.1
Microsoft
will not provide Extended Security Updates for Windows 8.1, in contrast to
Extended Security Updates for Windows 7. This indicates that after January 10,
2023, users of Windows 8.1 will no longer receive security updates. Microsoft,
however, is advising customers to upgrade to either Windows 10 or the most
recent Windows 11. It is significant to note that the business will continue to
support Windows 10 through October 14, 2025, and users will continue to receive
security updates.
