TCL
attacks Samsung with its new Mini LED TV line and plans to hold a 12 percent
market share by 2022.
On Tuesday,
TCL unveiled its top-of-the-line smart TV selection for the Indian market. With
pricing ranging from Rs 35,999 for the entry-level TCL P735 to Rs 2,29,990 for
the top-end TCL C835 that sports Mini LED technology, the Chinese electronics
giant has introduced three sets of devices spanning different categories and
targeted at different set of customers.
Mini LED
backlighting is a relatively recent idea that involves packing the TV's
backlighting system with much tiny LEDs that are about 1/40th the size of
regular LEDs. This allows for much more precise control over the TV's dimming
zones and black levels.
The goal is
to reduce what is known as the "blooming" effect, which is the halo
effect that frequently appears around bright objects on a dark background on
standard LCD TVs. Theoretically, all of this ought to result in increased
contrast and better picture quality.
With their
Neo QLED TVs, Samsung is now the only other company attempting this on a large
scale. With its key USP being lower prices, TCL is thus in a way taking a shot
at the South Korean giant. A 55-inch TCL C835 will cost Rs 1,19,990, compared
to Rs 1,50,990 for a 55-inch Samsung QN90A Neo QLED 4K TV.
The C835 has
various premium features despite its cheaper price, including what is described
as "India's first 144Hz variable refresh rate panel with Mini LED
innovation" that supports both IMAX Enhanced and Dolby Vision IQ
standards. For audio, TCL has teamed up with the Japanese company Onkyo and
introduced support for Dolby Atmos playback.
TCL
"wants to beat Sony" with products including the 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-,
and 75-inch TCL C635 Gaming QLED 4K TV and the 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, and 75-inch
TCL P735 4K HDR.
According to
Vijay Kumar Mikkilineni, Marketing Head at TCL India, "We are a very
tech-rich firm in terms of what we offer, and our objective is to supply the
same specs as Apple."
TCL is the only
company, after Sony, to employ Google TV software, placing it in a very
competitive position, according to Mikkilineni. It is available on the TCL
C835, TCL C635, and TCL P735.
Since 2018,
the company has been producing TVs in India. At its factory in Tirupati, Andhra
Pradesh, it recently began producing display panels for mobile phones and
televisions.
According to
Mikkilineni, "with our Indian manufacturing unit, we will now fulfil the
OEM market that was previously dependent on overseas," and "via this
panel factory, we are releasing panels from roughly 5-inch size to
65-inch."
At the time
of writing, the 280,000 square metre facility is TCL's greatest investment
outside of its home market. It can produce roughly 8 million units annually.
Samsung
With nearly
1,400 service locations spread across 30 states, TCL is "trying to make
sure our network can serve to different other categories of items [we are
entering into] like washing machines and air conditioners."
According to
Mikkilineni, the channel's coverage is "very strong." The brand is
available on Amazon and Flipkart in addition to being largely dependent on
physical stores for distribution and sales.
By the
conclusion of this fiscal year, "we are seeking around a 12 percent market
share," he continues.
