You may now hide your profile photo and online status from prying family
members with WhatsApp's new privacy features.
WhatsApp was spotted working on new privacy controls in
November, which would allow users to hide their last seen and online statuses,
as well as their profile pictures, from specific contacts — a much-needed
counter to competitor Telegram, which already allows users to hide this
information on a per-contact basis. It's been seven months, and the Meta-owned
platform has recently revealed that those granular settings for who can see
your personal data are now available.
On the overall, WhatsApp's privacy features aren't as good as
Telegram's. Users can sign up for Telegram without providing a phone number, in
addition to being able to hide their profile image and activity updates. When
it comes to personal communications, that's a huge difference. Previously,
WhatsApp users could hide their profile images and Last seen statuses from
anyone with their phone number, certain people in their contacts, or no one at
all.
Users may now choose which contacts in their phonebook they
don't want to share their profile photo, online status, or bio with. If you
want to try it out for yourself, go to the app's settings, select Account, then
Privacy, then select the personal information you want to conceal. The new
option My contacts except... should be visible here as well. You can pick the
contacts with whom you don't want to share all of this information from that
option. Keep in mind that you won't be able to see the online status of
contacts who can't see your Last seen status.
These updates come just a few days after WhatsApp released
some useful group call improvements.
Telegram allows users to choose which contacts they want to
share your profile photo and Last seen status with at all times. For those with
a small social network, including an affirmative approach may be more
beneficial. Nonetheless, WhatsApp's new privacy features ensure that your
profile photo and online status are hidden from prying eyes, curious friends
and family, and business contacts.
The feature is being rolled out via a server-side push, so if
you're on the latest WhatsApp code, you should see it on your phone (available
via APK Mirror).
